Theme: Sustainable Development – Our City, Water and the Environment

More than half the world’s population is living in towns and cities nowadays, and the trend towards urbanisation is accelerating. While cities have become engines of growth for developing countries and a magnet for people seeking better economic opportunities, cities today face numerous environmental challenges such as air and water pollution, resource scarcity and a mounting waste problem.

At the Opening Plenary, high-level speakers from the government, industry and international organisation sectors will be invited to share their respective role in tackling these challenges and creating a liveable and sustainable city.

The session will be chaired by Prof Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore and Chairperson, Water Leaders Summit.

Governance & Leadership - Towards Resource Efficient Cities of the Future

The emphasis on economic growth is creating unsustainable pressure on our resources, from land to energy to water. As engines of economic growth and centres of innovation, cities can help advance resource efficiency through formulating policies and implementing solutions that are effective and sustainable. Strong leadership and governance is essential to the realisation of these solutions. This high level plenary session provides an opportunity for leaders to discuss these challenges and share solutions to encourage resource efficiency to safeguard the environment, in promoting clean environment outcomes and stimulating green growth.

Session Two:
Enabling Technological Solutions for Sustainable Waste & Resource Management

In the toolkit of environmental solutions, technology features as an important component in helping to meet complex environmental challenges of the future in a dynamic changing environment. Technological solutions should help to overcome the current challenges faced by governments and stakeholders in sustainable waste and resource management.

This session will focus on instruments within the private, public and international arena that drive technological innovation and deployment, help developing regions access environmental expertise, plug technology gaps as well as to create meaningful roles for the private and public sectors in sustainable waste and resource management.

This session will be moderated by Mr Matthew Gubb, Director, IETC, UNEP.

0900 - 1230 Clean Environment Regulators Roundtable (By Invitation Only)

The Clean Environment Regulators Roundtable is jointly organised by the National Environment Agency, Singapore, and the World Bank, and supported by CleanEnviro Summit Singapore partners. The Clean Environment Regulators Roundtable provides enforcement officers with a platform to discuss the challenges faced by each participating country and city in working with environmental pollution and waste management issues. Participants are encouraged to highlight the problems encountered in their course of work, as well as share learning points and good practices.
